Welcome to
Nordic Energy Perspectives
Millions of electric cars in the Nordic countries
- what are their impact on the Nordic electricity system?
NEP studies indicate new load peaks in the
Nordic system after an introduction of 5 million electric cars (EV) on the roads.
What effects would they have on the Nordic electricity system?

Implementation of the RES
directive shifts power market balance and trade patterns in

Prominent strategies for environmental sustainablility
- in corporations in the energy sector
There is an obvious need for the
stationary energy sector to intensify its efforts to contribute
to sustainable development, both at a strategy level and in
order to integrate sustainable practices in its operations. To
gain insight in how environmental sustainability is put into
practice within corporations, close-up investigation is
essential. For this reason, case studies of companies with a
prominent strategy for environmental sustainability were chose
as a research methodology.

Winners and losers among the renewable
energy alternatives
Less biofuel when EU´s three 20% goals are applied
EU’s 20 % goals regarding increased use of
renewable energy, reduced use of energy and reduced emissions of greenhouse gases stimulate,
as expected, the use of renewable energy
in the Nordic countries. Model calculations from
the NEP project show that the use of
wind power and heat pumps increase significantly,
while the use of biofuels grows slower than in a situation where only the present
policy instruments are used.

Less
DH when EU´s three 20% goals are applied
NEP model results show a strong
competition for biofuels from waste incineration and heat pumps
and a stagnating heating use in Sweden.

40% CO2
reduction in the energy system
EU's goals for renewables and efficiency have significant
CO2 impact in the Nordic energy system
EU’s goals of at least 20 % renewables in the
energy mix and a reduction of the use of energy by 20 % through
efficiency measures will become powerful instruments also for
the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Model calculations
from the NEP project show that the two 20 % goals together will
reduce the carbon dioxide emissions from the Nordic energy
system (excluding transportation) by as much as 40 %.

Expensive to reach all EU goals
The climate goal demands the least effort!
The total cost for reaching EU’s three 20% goals in the
stationary energy sector in the Nordic countries (excl.
transportation) has been calculated by means of NEP’s energy
models. The climate goal is the least expensive, while the other
goals are considerably more expensive.
